Geological carbon storage: the key to the future use of Victoria's coal resources?
  • Geological carbon storage (GCS) research has identified secure storage options in both the offshore Gippsland Basin and Bass Basin; storage potential in the onshore Gippsland Basin is much more limited but not insignificant
  • Both the Gippsland and Bass basins offer decades to hundreds of years of large-volume (mega-tonnes per year) geological carbon storage
  • Storage in the Gippsland Basin will probably involve injection into unconfined Latrobe group saline aquifers, whereas CO2 injected into the Bass Basin will probably be stored in structural traps within the Upper Eastern View Group
  • Detailed modelling is currently underway to refine the storage options

National E-Waste Briefing

In 2007-08 16.8 million TVs, computers and related products reached their end of useful lives in Australia, of which 84% ended up in landfill. It's estimated that in 2028 a staggering 44 million computers and TVs will reach their end of life.

To address this escalating issue, Federal Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, has recently released a new National Waste Policy which puts computers and TVs at the forefront of recycling initiatives.

With the national framework currently being drafted, never has it been so important to bring together the key stakeholders in e-waste management to review current systems, facilitate interstate discussion and cooperation, and discuss strategies and solutions which could prove integral to Australia's future e-waste management initiatives.

Greenhouse gas abatement at large emitters using algae:

Demonstration of Carbon Mineralisation via Aqueous Precipitation Technology (CMAP) for Beneficial Use of CO2 in the Built Environment
  • Introduce the CMAP process: CO2 from a flue gas stream is absorbed into water and converted into carbonate anions through highly controlled pH modulation. The carbonate materials produced are essentially forms of limestone that can be used for a number of applications in building materials such as cement and aggregates
  • Consider advantages of CMAP as mineralogical sequestration process
  • Present the results of capture and mineralisation performance from continuous pilot scale tests and a 10 MW scale on a slipstream of the Dynegy Moss Landing power plant in Northern California
